Markets in Provence

15/05/2025

Basked in the sun and in a storm of scents, lavender, rosemary, thyme, fresh vegetables, immersed among loud voices typical from the south, a provençal market is more than just shopping around.
It’s a social and cultural experience which has become part of Provencal identity.

A trip in Provence isn't properly done without being part of it, and we love to guide you there and share our stories.

Markets of Provence : a bit of history

The typical Provençal market presents itself as a celebration of local producers and local identity, a collective ceremony in which everyone is both actor and spectator, a meeting place where everyone is treated equally and from which no one is excluded.

Very often traditional markets, some dating back to the Middle Ages, occupying squares and alleys, their primary aim was to simplify the supply of towns and villages, and incidentally to keep informed of the latest news.

The explosion of mass tourism during the 20th century led to the discovery and appreciation of this farandole of colours and this host of smells offered by local fruits and vegetables as well as the spices and herbs of Provence.

Walking down the markets you’ll smell flowers, fruits, and vegetables. You’ll feel the human warmth, the lifestyle of Provence, without artifice.
